Terrence
Terrence "Munch" Williams was one of the first students at SCAN’s Mullaly Academy, attending SCAN’s Reach for the Stars program. His academic performance at the time was most uninspiring: he had a 65 average at Taft High School. But there was something captivating about Munch.
“He Deserves a Chance”By accident, he managed to get an interview for admission to Holderness School, a prep school in New Hampshire that was then interviewing promising Reach for the Stars participants. He so impressed the interviewer that Holderness accepted him despite not only his academic record but the initial skepticism of Lew Zuchman, SCAN’s Executive Director, as well. But Lew was won over by Marcia Scipio, the then-director of Reach for the Stars. “He deserves a chance,” Marcia pleaded. After all, the power of positive thinking was the underpinning of Reach for the Stars.
Munch’s life took off. After Holderness, he graduated from Wesleyan College, accepted a stint with Teach for America and later became a teacher in the NYC public school system. After 3 years, he was appointed a Dean and later Assistant Principal.
Back at Home at SCANBut Munch’s roots were with SCAN. In 2009, he became the Director of SCAN’s Mullaly Academy, a position he had long been aiming for. It’s nice to have Munch back in the SCAN family.
