After School Programs          The Arts SCAN sponsors seven distinct After School Programs in East Harlem and the South Bronx. We emphasize literacy and education through activities that stimulate and enhance self-esteem. We strive to help each child discover an activity for which he or she can develop a real passion—be it basketball, chess, cheer leading, reading, dance, computers, creative writing, soccer or tai chi. Every "special activity," however, has an entrance key...satisfactory grades and participation in our study hall. When a student joins our award—winning P.S. 53 Cheer Leading Team there is one requirement... a weekly diary recounting his or her experiences. Playing on our championship SCAN/Mullaly basketball team requires passing grades. The ultimate goal is for each child to develop self-esteem, competence, discipline and an internalized sense of "Yes, I Can!"
