SCAN LAGUARDIA MEMORIAL HOUSE

In 1997 SCAN formed a unique alliance with LaGuardia Memorial House, one of New York's oldest Settlement Houses. Over the past four years SCAN has joined with LaGuardia to spark a meaningful rebirth of this historic settlement.

Formerly known as Haarlem House, LaGuardia has served as a vital center of community life for successive waves of Italo-American, Puerto Rican, African-American and Mexican-American immigrant families.

In fact, SCAN LaGuardia Memorial House celebrated its Centennial Year in 1999! With programs echoing the same spirit as SCAN's contemporary refrain of "Yes, I Can!", Haarlem House gave birth to the Honorable Fiorello LaGuardia, Congressman Vito Marcontonio, and countless additional esteemed Italian-Americans; as well as, Puerto Rican leaders such as State Senator Olga Mendez, Herman Badillo, Isabel Mendez, in partnership with African American dignitaries such as Congressman Charles Rangel.

Today, SCAN LaGuardia sponsors a holistic range of programming responsive to the needs of East Harlem children, parents, families and senior citizens.

After School Programs emphasizing literacy; Family Counseling, Advocacy and Parent Effectiveness Training; Creative Arts and Recreation of all shapes and sizes; Youth and Adult Employment; Youth Leadership in partnership with SCAN's innovative "Reach for the Stars" upward bound project; a Day Care Nursery and Senior Citizen project, Community Planning Board meetings, Human Service workshops, Summer Day Camp, Family Camping, Boys Scout Troop, Basketball Tournaments, Computer Workshops, a unique Children's Learning Center ... and, so much more! All under one roof, serving "El Barrio" in a unique and meaningful manner.
