SCAN families suffer from the cumulative effects of severe socio-economic stress. Poverty... domestic violence... intergenerational public assistance... homelessness... substance abuse... rapidly deteriorating public schools all conspire to ravage familial foundations. SCAN's approach to the treatment of "high risk" families immediately addresses concrete risk factors while focusing the balance of our program efforts upon positive activities—building upon child, parent and family strengths. And why positive programming? Because we don't believe that health is nurtured by focusing efforts upon pathology. We believe families heal through positive, esteem-building activities that elevate the sense of self in each SCAN parent, child and family. To that end, SCAN offers a holistic range of empowerment, family-focused educational, recreational and creative arts programming, as well as counseling. Upon successful completion of a therapeutic program, each parent, with great pride, receives an achievement award. The programs cumulatively serve to heal and encourage each SCAN parent and child to truly believe... "Yes, I Can!"
