Education          Early Childhood Programs While public schools deteriorate at an alarming rate, SCAN has established educational programming as a priority at seven East Harlem and South Bronx public schools. Our innovative, strength-based approach offers traditional three R's interspersed with creative, non-traditional learning activities. Some of the exciting programs are: Whole Language Family Literacy, Parent Mentor Literacy Workshops, Adult Basic Education from pre-GED to ESL classes, Computer Workshops for children, parents and families, our Pete Pascale Learning Center and Goodman Children's Library at LaGuardia Memorial House, Creative Writing and Poetry Classes, Summer Day Camp infused with creative whole language literacy experiences, SAT classes, weekly diaries required of our budding NBA stars and members of SCAN's El Barrio Children's Dance Ensemble. With these programs, SCAN has become a child welfare pathfinder in the establishment of a definitive school-based presence.
